Cultural scholar Jacquelynn Baas received her bachelor’s degree in Art History from Michigan State University where she studied under Elizabeth Gilmore Holt, author of the multi-volume Documentary History of Art. Baas was awarded a doctoral degree in Art History by the University of Michigan (PhD 1982), where she earlier was awarded a master’s degree with a specialty in museum practice (1973).
Baas worked in art museums for the first twenty-five years of her career, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art (Registrar, then Assistant to the Director, 1974-82); the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College (Chief Curator, then Director 1982-88); and the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, where she served as Director (1988-99) and, currently, Director Emeritus.
Over the past twenty-five years, Baas has focused on writing and curating. Her book-length publications include Buddha Mind In Contemporary Art (University of California Press 2004), Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today (California 2005), Learning Mind: Experience Into Art (California 2009), and Marcel Duchamp and the Art of Life (MIT Press 2019).
